Home Contents insurance.....What locks do I need?
25 Apr 2012
Many people call me telling me that their home contents is up for renewal and to check if their locks are up to standard. Now checking locks are up to standard can be a bit of a grey area, many companies will ask for a 5 lever deadlock on the front door whilst others will insist on British Standard 5 lever deadlocks-so whats the difference? The main differences are the size of the bolt, and the drill resistant cover over the lock. Whilst any accredited London Locksmith will tell you this may not make a huge difference to any intruder it makes a big difference to them trying to open the lock.
What we will recommend is making all of the locks in your property conform to british standard if its possible. The locks on your front door if it is wooden should conform to BS3621 which is often a 5 lever drill resistant lock or an equivilant. We would also recommend your PVC doors being fitted with British standard snap, bump and pick resistant cylinders.
All London Locksmiths should recommend BS Euro cylinders if security is a major concern as despite standard cylinders being accepted by many insurance companies it could end up as a minimum requirement with PVC doors.
Finally Windows will need to have key operated locks. This is as stated in our previous article is crucial for insurance purposes and need to be in place as a matter of urgency for ground floor windows and windows by balconys etc.
